Retrofitted double glazing

We have insulated our 37 yr old home and are considering the above. Full double glazing really costs. We have had “Magicseal” (fitted internally to existing windows) recommended to us by a friend who had it fitted about a month ago – but what is it like in the long term? Any experiences would be useful – we have already had a couple of cautionary comments – not exactly adverse but just saying “Watch it”.

Hi Jane,
Magnetically attached secondary double glazing is cheaper than retrofitting the double glazed glass units and it can be used on aluminium windows as well as wooden . I’m aware of two companies installing this type of product: Magic Seal ( http://www.magicseal.com) and Magnetite (www.magnetite.co.nz).
The feedback I have had is that it works well, the insulation value is similar or very slightly better than the glass units, and sound reduction is better, but that you have to be careful not to scratch it.
You clean the panels with a lint free cloth and dont use abrasive cleaning products.

We are in a similar situation; we have insulated our 25 yr old home and are wondering about best options for the aluminium single glazing. Floor-length lined curtains have really helped, and I’m keen to try Felix Collins’ diy secondary glazing. http://felixcollins.blogspot.com/
In the long-term, we’re wondering about retrofitting double-glazing into existing frames, although have concerns that using the existing aluminium frames will reduce the overall impact. I am interested to hear which option you chose, and of anyone else’s experiences with retrofitted double glazing. Thanks.
