Low Cost Plastic Window Insulation Does Work!

Hi I just wanted to share my experience this winter with the super cheap ( around $25) window kits containing sheets of plastic film and double sided tape. You can either order on-line ( which I did from www.cea.co.nz) or I believe you can purchase them at some DIY stores.

I put the film on our living room window at around 8pm one cold June evening. At the time we had an oil column heater in the room which had been on since around 6 pm. The thermometer on the wall showed the temperature was a bare 18 degrees.

After putting up the plastic film (a 20 minute job), I went off  and came backaround an hour later. To my surprise the room was really warm, around 23 degrees. Same heater, same room, if anything colder outside than before- I had to conclude the film must really work.

It is quite fragile though.  Looking at it,  you could hardly tell it was there. Unfortunately, my  teenaged son forgot about it and put his finger through it. The consequent hole was taped over with cellotape, but I think it did reduce the insulating effect a bit.

So,  probably a good solution for careful home owners, or for a window over the kitchen bench or somewhere relatively inaccessable. Could be a really good solution for tenants.

Removing the film left just one tny patch where the paint had pulled off- nothing a small dab of paint couldn’t fix.
