Insulating a skillion ceiling

We are considering reroofing our house which has skillion ceilings in most rooms. I’m aware that there should be an air space between roof and insulation of 1 inch, correct?. What is the best type of insulation to use in this situation? Other than adding a new level ceiling, is there any thing else we could do to improve its efficiency? eg. foil under the roofing sheets?

If you dont have any extra space and you can either add battons on top of the purlins to increase the space or use a foil product with air cells in it (goes by various trade names).
