I was going to install a heat pump but noticed at placemakers they had a new product called Econo-heat heaters, they claim to cost very little to run but are they as good as a decent heat pump.

Consumer Magazine has posted a good report on Econo Heaters and Nobo Heaters on their website. These heaters are the ‘minis’ of the heater world. They are cheap to run but are very small. They won’t produce a great deal of heat at all. They may have a place keeping the chill off small to medium sized bedrooms, but they aren’t in the same league as a heat pump which (when properly sized) will provide a decent amount of heat at a much lower cost, which is what you want for living areas.

Another useful resource (also from Consumer NZ) is their report on choosing a heater. Includes an explanation of different types of (electric) heaters and determine what size heater you need for a particular space.

Note that in NZ these reports are available for free at your local library.

I was going to get a heat pump, but then winter was so cold everyone was having problems with the outside bits freezing. I got 2 NOBO heaters for my living room and dinning room that warm better. If you get the right sizes and dont over work the heater it is quite cheap to run. I have gone through 1 very cold winter the highest power bill I got and we only use NOBO heating was just over $400 and that was because everyone was at home for 3 weeks. I have had people come to my house and comment on how warm it is in winter and they have changed their minds about what heating they are having in there house. So I think it depends on where you are and what you want. I love my NOBO heaters and would get them again.
