Curtain Banks

What is a Curtain Bank?

Locals get new curtains at Energy Options' Whakatane Curtain Bank

A Curtain Bank is a community service that recycles used curtains and provides them free of charge to members of the community who couldn’t otherwise afford them.

The Community Energy Action Curtain Bank was the first of its kind in New Zealand, and has been operating since 1995.

Curtains provide cheap and effective insulation for your windows making your home cheaper and easier to heat, they also provide highly valued privacy.

A Curtain Bank is usually run with a combination of part-time staff and volunteers who sort,  re-line and repair donated curtains so they are ready for re-use.

Curtain Banks operate with financial support from a number of public and private sponsors, and investment from the charitable organisations operating them. Funding arrangements differ across organisations.

Curtain Banks are always ready to accept donations of curtains and may be looking for volunteers. If you are keen to help out contact the Curtain Banks directly for more information.
