Cost effectiveness of Double Glazing

We have a modern 2005 200m2 home but unfortunately it has single glazed aluminium windows. I am curious as to how much energy is lost. Estimates of replacing with quality double glazing [thermally broken or uPVC frames] are approx $25-$35K – that is a lot of power bills !!!
Interestingly and comparatively for $35K I can have installed a 7kW Solar PV system [to achieve grid parity] with a 12 year payback]
