The Community Energy Network was officially launched by Hon. Tariana Turia, Minister of the Community and Voluntary Sector at an event in Wellington yesterday.
In her speech the Minister said: “The writer, Samuel Johnson, once said that Genius is that energy which collects, combines, amplifies, and animates. Today’s launch is a perfect example of that genius at work.”
Network Chair, Jo Hunt reiterated the importance of cooperation, saying “By working together we are more than the sum of our parts”.
Combined, members employ over 400 staff around the country and last year collectively insulated 20% of the houses improved under the government’s Warm Up New Zealand: Heat Smart programme.
The Network recognises the work still required in communities to improve our housing stock for the benefit of New Zealand and New Zealand. Jo Hunt, Chair of the Network says “Cold, inefficient houses still create huge problems for New Zealand despite considerable government investment in the area”.
Research from the University of Otago suggests that 400,000 kiwis could be affected by Fuel Poverty. (i.e. more than 10% of household income is needed to heat the house to World Health Organisation standards). “Fuel poverty is just one of the problems exacerbated by our housing. It creates a massive burden for New Zealand, and is one of the results of our old, cold houses. It’s issues like this our members are working together, and with our partners, to help address”.
